Conservatives drop to third place in Local Elections

Anthony Hannay and Steve Burt, both members of Reddish Conservative Club, stood as candidates in last Thursday's local election. Both candidates were narrowly beaten (Anthony Hannay by only 15 votes) in the race to be second behind Labour in the two Reddish wards. With a turnout of over double the 2008 and 2009 local elections, it is clear that the Liberal Democrats saw the biggest bounce in their votes. The BNP continue to be marginalised in both Reddish North and Reddish South, with less than 10% of the vote in Reddish North and half that in Reddish South.

Peter Scott (Labour) 3,209 votes.
Danny Langley (Liberal Democrats) 1,115 votes.
Anthony Hannay (Conservative) 1,100 votes.
Paul Bennett (British National Party) 536 votes.

Reddish South

Thomas Grundy (Labour) 3,192 votes.
Norman Beverley (Liberal Democrats) 1,433 votes.
Steve Burt (Conservative) 1,320 votes.
George Thorne (British National Party) 326 votes.

Conservatives Second in Denton & Reddish

The Conservative Party's prospective parliamentary candidate, Julie Searle, came a creditable second in the race to become the member of parliament for the Denton & Reddish constituency. Labour won, with the Lib Dems third (the same order as in May, 2005).

The incumbent, Labour's Andrew Gwynne, saw his share of the vote drop by 5.6% whilst Conservative Julie Searle polled 36.8% more votes than Alex Story managed to obtain back in 2005.

Andrew Gwynne (Labour) 19,191 votes.
Julie Searle (Conservative) 9,360 votes.
Stephen Broadhurst (Liberal Democrat) 6,727 votes.
William Robinson (UKIP) 2,060 votes.
Jeff Dennis (Independent) 297 votes.

Historical Minutes

Conservatives Second in Reddish (again)

The Conservative Candidate, Gareth Butler, contested the Reddish North By-Election yesterday. Labour won, with the Conservatives second (the same result as in May, 2008). The turnout fell by over 300 voters and with UKIP contesting Reddish North, the Conservatives saw their share of the vote diminish. Labour and Liberal Democrat votes remained largely unchanged. In contrast, support for the British National Party fell by over 50%.

Charity Golf Day

The Spring '09 Charity Golf Day was held at Boysnope Park GC. In what turned out to be a very closely contested round of golf the winner, by just one shot, was Chris Perkins. Congratulations Chris!

UEFA Champion's League Final

Snooker Summer League Winner

The 7th Annual Reddish Conservative Club Snooker Summer League concluded on the 26th August, 2008.

A total of 26 members of the club participated in the league this year and, after 16 weeks and 113 frames of snooker, the winner—by just 6 points—was Lee Hanson.

Charity Cricket Match

Function Room Hire Prices Slashed

Reddish Conservative Club have slashed the price for members and non-members to hire the function room to just £25 and £50 respectively.

Function room hire is an important source of revenue for the Club, so members are encouraged to actively advertise the function room to family, friends and work colleagues.

Two members of Reddish Conservative Club stood as candidates in last Thursday's local election. Anthony Hannay finished a clear second in Reddish North, with 25% of the vote. In Reddish South, Steve Burt also finished a respectable second too, with 33% of the vote.

Conservatives Gain Council Seat

The local election results are now in for Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC). The council is still controlled by the Liberal Democrats but the net-effect of the election was for the Conservatives to gain an extra seat on the council, at the expense of Labour.

B-Team Wins Snooker League

The Reddish Conservative Club B-Team have won the 'Aggregate League' in the Stockport and District Association of Conservative Clubs Snooker League. The B-Team clinched the trophy, by 3 points, on the last day of the season. To add to Reddish Conservative Club's snooker achievements, the A-Team came an impressive third in the 'Aggregate League' too.

Also, congratulations go to Dennis Mellor (A-Team) and Mike Rae (B-Team) who finished as the top players in their teams and who will now go on to represent Reddish Conservative Club in the Champion's Cup.

Congratulations and heartfelt thank-you go to Barry Urmston (A-Team captain), Steve Burns (B-Team captain) and Ray Deane (B-team treasurer) for all their hard work and support during the season.

The Stockport and District Association of Conservative Clubs Snooker League will hold their Presentation Evening at Reddish Conservative Club later this year. Be sure to check back for further details.

Charity Golf Day Raises £420

Today's charity golf day saw a return to Boysnope Park Golf Club and was another huge success. There were 24 budding Arnold Palmers in the field but there can only be one winner; congratulations go to Neil Locket who won the prestigious trophy with an impressive gross 88 (nett 72), to finish level par for the day. The lowest gross round of the day was scored by our secretary, Jon Garside, with a gross 86 (nett 76). Bringing up the rear, the winner of the wooden spoon was Ian Bailey, with... well let’s just leave it as comfortably three digits.

The event raised an impressive £420 for charity. A big thank you to everyone who attended, especially Pam and Dave Lamb for organising the event and the wonderful catering.

Broadway Nites, a fantastic Soul/Motown Trio are playing Reddish Conservative Club on Saturday, 12th April, 2008. No need to tell you about these guys, as they are always popular visitors to the Club. The band has been together now since the late 1970's. Originally, they were a Beatles covers band and now they have evolved into a Motown and 60s/70s classic pop, top vocal harmony showband.
