Conservatives return to second place in Local Elections

Anthony Hannay, Julia Whelan, and Steve Burt, all members of Reddish Conservative Club, stood as candidates in the local elections held on the 5th May, 2011. All candidates managed to be best-of-the-rest behind a dominant Labour who were, as usual, runaway winners. The biggest losers were the Liberal Democrats who saw their votes predominantly transfer to Labour. The BNP continue to be further marginalised in both Reddish North and Reddish South, with less than 5% of the vote.

Reddish North

Paul Moss (Labour) 2,421 votes.

David Wilson (Labour) 2,304 votes.

Anthony Hannay (Conservative) 645 votes.

Julia Whelan (Conservative) 569 votes.

Paul Bennett (British National Party) 291 votes.

Patrick Buttle (Liberal Democrats) 231 votes.

Robert Littlehales (Liberal Democrats) 183 votes.

Reddish South

Walter Brett (Labour) 2,347 votes.

Steve Burt (Conservative) 640 votes.

Norman Beverley (Liberal Democrats) 421 votes.

Sheila Spink (British National Party) 177 votes.

Source: Manchester Evening News

Charity Golf Day

The Spring '11 Charity Golf Day was held at Houldsworth Golf Club on 8th April, 2011. In glorious weather and on a golf course in fabulous condition, the deserved winner, by four shots, was Simon Thorpe. Congratulations Simon!

Thanks to all those that helped to organise and attend such an enjoyable and memorable day. Despite the lower turnout than usual, and thanks to the generosity of all those who attended, we managed to raise £120 for the David Lewis Centre, a charity near Alderley Edge providing residential accommodation for people with epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Let's hope a better turnout, for the Autumn '11 Charity Golf Day, which will be played in September this year.

Charity Golf Day

The Autumn '10 Charity Golf Day was held at Houldsworth Golf Club on 10th September, 2010. In what proved to be very challenging conditions, the runaway winner, by seven shots, was Jon Garside. Congratulations Jon!

Thanks to all those that helped to organise and attend such an enjoyable and memorable day. Despite the lower than usual turnout, we managed to raise £200 for Help for Heroes. Let's hope for better weather, and a better turnout, for the Spring '11 Charity Golf Day, which will be played at the beginning of April next year.

Conservatives drop to third place in Local Elections

Anthony Hannay and Steve Burt, both members of Reddish Conservative Club, stood as candidates in last Thursday's local election. Both candidates were narrowly beaten (Anthony Hannay by only 15 votes) in the race to be second behind Labour in the two Reddish wards. With a turnout of over double the 2008 and 2009 local elections, it is clear that the Liberal Democrats saw the biggest bounce in their votes. The BNP continue to be marginalised in both Reddish North and Reddish South, with less than 10% of the vote in Reddish North and half that in Reddish South.

Reddish North

Peter Scott (Labour) 3,209 votes.

Danny Langley (Liberal Democrats) 1,115 votes.

Anthony Hannay (Conservative) 1,100 votes.

Paul Bennett (British National Party) 536 votes.

Reddish South

Thomas Grundy (Labour) 3,192 votes.

Norman Beverley (Liberal Democrats) 1,433 votes.

Steve Burt (Conservative) 1,320 votes.

George Thorne (British National Party) 326 votes.

Source: stockportexpress.co.uk

Labour won, with the Lib Dems third (the same order as in May, 2005).

The incumbent, Labour's Andrew Gwynne, saw his share of the vote drop by 5.6% whilst Conservative Julie Searle polled 36.8% more votes than Alex Story managed to obtain back in 2005.

The first tranche of historical minutes, from committee meetings, have been published. They cover three years, from 1917 to 1919. Hopefully, they will be of interest, providing a valuable insight into the running of Reddish Conservative Club almost a century ago.

Also, you will find that the committee section now includes a Past Officials page. On that page you will find a table showing the past officials of our club. If you can help fill in any gaps, or notice any spelling errors, please contact me here.
